For instance, our partner, Brian Gover acted as Commission Counsel in inquiries including the Walkerton, Air India, Cornwall, and Maher Arar inquiries. We also represented the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario in the Goudge Inquiry into paediatric forensic pathology arising from the work of Dr. Charles Smith. In addition, we represented major parties in the Mississauga Public Inquiry, Toronto Computer Leasing Inquiry, and the SARS Review.

Where there is not a conflict of interest, we have also taken advisory work for interested parties in other inquiries, including the Oliphant Commission into the dealings between Brian Mulroney and Karlheinz Schreiber, and the inquiry into the collapse of a shopping mall in Elliot Lake, Ontario.

Coroners’ inquests have many similarities to public inquiries, while following their own unique procedure in pursuing the death-investigation mandate. We have acted for individuals facing potential criticism or exposure in such inquests, ensuring that they do not face inappropriate criticism or sanction.

As in all our areas of practice, our cross-field expertise in criminal, administrative and civil proceedings allows us to manage the interests of our clients with a view to protecting them from possible subsequent civil or other liability.
