Stockwoods has acted on matters involving the special obligations of regulated professionals for over thirty years. Our well developed practice in this area has been repeatedly recognized by LEXPERT and has two major aspects: regulatory issues and civil litigation.

Our expertise is regularly sought out by professional regulatory bodies themselves. We act for numerous regulators, including the governing bodies of many of Ontario’s health professions, as prosecutors or as independent legal counsel to tribunals.

We advise professionals on the regulatory obligations associated with their profession and represent them in proceedings alleging misconduct or other violations of professional standards. In cases where we are not conflicted due to an ongoing client relationship with a regulator, we represent professionals in defending proceedings or in appeals from unfavourable decisions.

In appropriate cases, we also act either for plaintiffs seeking recovery for damages caused by the negligence of their professional advisors or as counsel for the defendant professionals.

Our depth of experience in both the civil and administrative spheres allows us to provide sophisticated advice that takes account of all areas of potential exposure that are of heightened concern to professionals.
